The Red Dot School

The Red Dot School is a bridge between various communities of practice in the field of architecture. We offer online and in-person studio courses that connect designers around the world, explore old and new technologies, and dream up possible futures.

"Giving A Fish, Releasing A Bird"
September 2023
The Red Dot School grew out of a network of friends, artists, designers, architects, professors. and social organizers—all living/working in Japan or within the Pacific Rim—who have coalesced around a few key questions:

_In regions experiencing rapid population decline, how can architects incorporate strategies for locally-focused growth that connect an aging population with the next generation into their work?

_If an island is a microcosm within which the repercussions of global socioeconomic forces are written in miniature, what can we learn by studying it closely? What stories of adaptation and resilience does it have to tell us?

_What are the on-the-ground applications for algorithmically-driven processes of sorting / analyzing architectural salvage? How can computational thinking assist in creating a zero-waste deconstruction / reconstruction loop?

_Can a small international architecture school (specializing in closed-system methodologies for the built environment) serve as a socioeconomic driver for its neighborhood? Can it learn from, honor and amplify the circular social practices that exist around it?

Our 2024 summer studio is a chance for us to conduct participatory research that seeks to answer these questions. We intend this course to be useful to architects and designers who are grappling with similar thoughts, and who are interested in getting their hands dirty while generating a small body of drawings and models that explore the possibilities of local circular architectural systems, over a 10 day course. We have been conducting architecture studios on Sagishima in collaboration with islanders since 2017. Our course operates out of the oldest standing building on the island—formerly a clinic.

Our office in Ichikawa, Chiba is home to a collective of architects, designers and craftspeople, and serves as our studio headquarters when holding programs in the Tokyo region.
